Munich

Heart of the Hunter

Munich is the setting of Thobela Mpayipheli’s first assassination, a memory that returns during his later flight and brings his past training into direct conflict with the human reality of his target. The episode establishes both the precision of his preparation and the moment that unsettles it: as he is ready to fire, a woman and child appear in the scope.

The mission in Munich

Thobela is positioned with an SVD, a long-range sharpshooter’s rifle, and watches a door about a kilometre away for Klemperer, a middle-aged West German double agent. The rifle’s stated reach is 3,800 metres, making the distance well within its capacity. Klemperer is marked for elimination by the KGB; Thobela, an African National Congress exchange student, has been sent to carry out the task. The setup places Munich at the intersection of competing intelligence loyalties, while making the assassination Thobela’s first real test beyond the practice range.

Training and the first shot

Thobela’s confidence as a marksman has been built through exceptional results. In East Germany, while studying at the East German Ministry for State Security’s sharpshooters’ school, he helped test an experimental SVDS. At 2,000 metres, in poor light and a crosswind of seventeen kilometres per hour, he achieved a grouping of less than 400 millimetres. Evgeniy Fedorovich Dragunov, the rifle’s celebrated developer, had been so struck by the result that he reached out to grip Thobela’s shoulder. In Munich, however, competitive skill cannot insulate him from the difference between a target on a range and a living person. His hands tremble and sweat as the door opens; the account marks the mission as his first assassination, not another exercise in marksmanship.

The interruption and its return

As Thobela increases pressure on the trigger, a woman and child appear in the scope. The crosshairs rest on the woman’s forehead, but their presence freezes him. He exhales, and his heart beats faster. The episode’s decisive turn is therefore not a shot described in the account, but the interruption of his aim: the intended target is momentarily displaced by the vulnerable lives sharing his line of sight.

Years later, tension at a petrol station resurrects the memory, including the trembling hands and perspiration associated with that first assassination. While riding through the Karoo, Thobela finds his attention divided between the road and Munich; he understands the returning past as part of a process of healing, change, and closure. Munich thus persists not merely as the place of an intelligence operation, but as a formative memory that resurfaces while he is trying to move beyond his former life.
